Hawthorne Hotel's Halloween Ball Theme

This year's Hawthorne Hotel Halloween Ball will feature the theme "Reality Bites" and will be our take on the myriad reality shows that are currently the rage on television. Each room of the Ball will be decorated in a way that pokes a bit of fun and our own unique style at an outrageous style of entertainment.
We hope having this advance look at our theme will help to get you in to the costume-making spirit, and that you will have fun creating your own version of "Reality Bites" to wear to our most outrageous costume ball ever.
We know it might feel early, but we sell out for this one-of-a-kind event earlier and earlier every year. Don't be disappointed by waiting until the last minute!
I hope to see you here.

A New Exhibit at the Kensington Stobart Gallery in the Hawthorne Hotel

video
(Paintings of the seafaring life, by Phil Cusumano)

Here is a video tour that I took on Saturday to show you the newest show at the Kensington Stobart Art Gallery here in the Hawthorne Hotel. The art is all by Phil Cusumano who is a marine artist and sea captain. Mr. Cusumano, who signs his paintings "Filippo" for the name on his birth certificate, was born into a seafaring family, and this was his career for most of his life. However, he has always loved to draw and paint, so when the fishing industry declined, he decided to pursue work as graphic artist.

I will also post a video of his still-life paintings

(Beautiful still-life paintings by Phil Cusumano)

These paintings are all available for you to purchase at the Kensington-Stobart Gallery located on the front side of the Hawthorne Hotel. For more information, you can dial the Gallery directly at 978-825-0022.

I hope to see you there, or here, at the Hawthorne Hotel.

Tuesday , July 14 ~~ Panama and Nevada
Wednesday , July 15 ~~ Papua New Guinea and New Hampshire
Thursday , July 16 ~~ Paraguay and New Jersey
Friday , July 17 ~~ Peru and New Mexico
Saturday , July 18 ~~ Philippines and New York
Sunday , July 19 ~~ Poland and North Carolina

I hope you enjoy this bit of local color on our weekly flag page.

More on the PEM fence story

As promised on April 25's blog post, here is the rest of the story about the PEM's fence. On the day before yesterday, the workers were there installing the new pieces, and I snapped these photos. It looks beautiful.
I will also take some photos once everything is complete.
I hope you enjoy seeing a little bit of what is going on in the neighborhood of the Hawthorne Hotel.

Wikki Stix are part of our child-friendly menu

Each child who dines with us in the Tavern or Nathaniel's receives their own little packet which includes a child's menu, a set of Wikki-Stix, and a 'connect-the-dots' puzzle. Here you see Sara and the house that she created with her wicki-stix.

Favors from Grandmother

We hosted a shower in Sophia's this past weekend, and the favors were little crocheted baskets created with a great deal of love by the grandmother of the bride.

Here is Maria Silveira, with one of her little crocheted baskets. She obviously made these with a lot of love for her granddaughter, on this special day.

We really enjoy getting involved with our guests, and helping them celebrate these important milestones in their lives. I hope you enjoy

Rotary

If you are a careful and long-time reader of this blog, you will already know that I am a member of the Rotary Club of Salem, and that this club has met at the Hawthorne Hotel for decades, in fact since the Hawthorne was built, only leaving when the hotel was shut down for a period of time and financial distress.

Rotary International recently produced an excellent You Tube video explaining a little bit more about what Rotarians do, and I thought this forum would be a good place to share it. So, here is the link:

It certainly makes me proud to call myself a Rotarian.

If you click on this link you will get to the Destination Salem blog on the newest exhibit at PEM (located only one block from the Hawthorne Hotel.) This is a terrific exhibit highlighting a connection between recycling and art. While it appears that this is a show that appeals to people of all ages, it is particularly attractive to children.

I hope to see you there (or here.)

A Very Talented Guest

Instead of centerpieces, these guests who were having a bridal shower in our Pickman Room this past weekend brought in individually decorated cakes and used those instead.

The sister of the bride does this as a hobby. They are so lovely, we thought you would like to see them.

Each table had a uniquely decorated cake, all tied together by a lovely color scheme, and each with a somewhat floral look.

Jennifer Bissell is the "pastry chef" of the family, and here she is with one of her beautiful cakes.

This shower was a very meaningful event for this special family, and they were happy for us to share this blog article with you. We loved the idea, and are pleased to help you see a little bit more of the detail that happens within the walls of the Hawthorne Hotel.

Hawthorne Hotel Management TEAM at work

(Above, left to right: Kelly Lilly, Ken O'Keefe, Tom Bracken and Jennifer Normant)

Because of all the rain we have had in the past week, we haven't really been able to attend to deadheading the flower boxes.
So today, right after our monthly managers' meeting, we all went outside and did a big attack -- making short work of the myriad of dead and dying petunia blossoms so that new ones will take their places.

Kelly shows off for the camera.

I got to teach Jamie Scranton how to 'deadhead' a flower box. She was a quick learner!

I hope you enjoy learning more about the ins and outs of running the Hawthorne Hotel.

Cinema Salem is One of Salem's Jewels

Not every community is as lucky as we are in Salem. One of the things that makes this a special place to live and work is Cinema Salem. It is an independent movie theater with the best popcorn (real butter!) and a great selection of non-traditional movie beverages.

I have already seen"UP" and it was one of the best movies I have seen this year. You should not miss it!! But bring some tissues, because there are a few places where you will need them.

Juli

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are some excerpts from their weekly newsletter:
Coming this weekend:
The Proposal (PG13); The Hangover (R); UP (PG); and The Country Teacher (NR)
Back from Scotland, I had a chance to finally catch UP and THE PROPOSAL this past weekend, and loved both of them. The latter is worth seeing for its relentless gentle humor and occasional deep insight, as well as the sight of Rockport, Massachusetts, filling in for Sitka, Alaska, with the familiar stores, landscapes, and Motifs backed seamlessly by fog- shrouded mountains.
THE PROPOSAL (PG13 - 148 minutes), which has proven enormously popular with American audiences, even those who don't live where it was filmed, will screen this week on Friday and Saturday at (11:30 AM), (2:00), (4:30), 7:00 and 9:20; and Sunday-Thursday at (11:30 AM), (2:00), (4:30) and 7:00.
I attended UP on Monday as the Father's Day guest of my peerless daughter and like everyone else, found it profound, whimsical, inventive, and visually stunning throughout. Don't forget that you can catch this amazing film (and any of our features) for only $6 by attending the first show of the day.
UP will play Friday and Saturday at (12:00), (2:20), (4:50), 7:15 and 9:30; and Sunday-Thursday at (12:00), (2:20), (4:50) and 7:15.
THE HANGOVER, another surprise hit of the summer, returns for one more week at CinemaSalem, playing Friday and Saturday at (12:30), (2:50), (5:15), 7:30 and 9:45; and Sunday- Thursday at (12:30), (2:50), (5:15) and 7:30.
Gracing the Screening Room this week is THE COUNTRY TEACHER (NR - 153 minutes) boasting a hefty rating on RottenTomatoes,com. Here's a sample of the critical raving: "It's a movie that demonstrates, if you'll pardon the sports metaphor, how deep the bench is in Eastern European film." Salon. "Directed by Bohdan Sláma, it deals with weighty issues -- loneliness, sexual identity, love (straight and gay) -- in a quiet, intelligent fashion." New York Post. "The film's portrayal of farm life as a rugged pastorale lends The Country Teacher a foundation of visceral truth." New York Times. "Bohdan Sláma's direction for The Country Teacher, a film characterized by beautifully long, languorous takes, has an assured expressiveness." Slant
THE COUNTRY TEACHER will screen Friday and Saturday at (11:45 AM), (1:45), (4:00), 6:45 and 9:10; and Sunday- Thursday at (11:45 AM), (1:45), (4:00) and 6:45.
Peonies at the Ropes Garden
Peony with bee.
Ruffled pink peony.
The Ropes Mansion Garden, part of the Peabody Essex Museum, is open to the public, and right in my neighborhood. In fact I often walk through there on my way to work. I love seeing flowers to start my day, and am particularly fond of peonies. Not only are they beautiful, but their scent is fabulous.
I hope you enjoy these photos that I snapped with my iPhone last week.
If you want to see the Ropes Gardens, just walk out the Essex Street door of the Hawthorne Hotel, turn right, and walk about 5 blocks to the 300 block of Essex St, just past the First Church.
Destination Salem
We are so fortunate in Salem to have a great organization that has as its main mission to promote Salem to visitors. That organization is Destination Salem, and their website is www.Salem.org
In addition to a great website, they too have a blog, and they Tweet on Twitter as well.
You see, while Salem has a wicked long history, we are also very forward-thinking as well, and many of us have embraced the new technology of Facebooking and Twittering and Blogging and so on.
I hope you will visit Destination Salem's website, and see their blog. There is lots to see there, and plenty to do in Salem this year.
BTW, are you following the Hawthorne Hotel on Twitter? We hope you are!!!
Flowers with Brick, Again
One of my favorite themes for taking photos is to snap pictures of flowers juxtaposed with the antique brick sidewalks of Salem. I just love how the soft, fresh colors and textures of flowers contrast with the old, worn bricks.
These photos were all taken with my iPhone in the McIntire District of Salem this Spring.
I hope you enjoy seeing them, and I hope to see you here.
A Compromise Planter Box Solution is Reached
It is petunia season now at the Hawthorne Hotel. These photos show them off very nicely.
If you have been following our blog in the past month, you will know that we were asking our blog readers for their opinion about some new bushes that we planted in these planter boxes in front of the hotel.
Well, dear readers, you spoke, and we listened, but nature wasn't in on the deal. The cedar trees that we planted were evidently from a defective batch, and one of them died. It turned out that wasn't the only one -- every one of the cedars that our nursery bought from a grower failed save one, and we had the 'one' -- so we sent them both back, and compromised with these boxwoods that you see here.
We think the compromise is a good one. I was looking for something that matched the 'weight' of the planter boxes, and we think that these bushes are much more fitting than the mugo pines that we had in there previously.
I hope you like the final choice!
We Claim this Island in the Name of the Hawthorne Hotel
The island across the street from the Hawthorne Hotel recently sprouted this sign, saying it was sponsored (i.e. maintained) by the Boys and Girls Club of Salem. Unfortunately, this is not the case. If you are a loyal reader of this blog, you will already know that.
We contacted the City Department that handles putting out these signs each year, and found out that it was indeed a clerical error. The sign has been moved where it belongs (on the island across from the Boys and Girls Club), so in case you were wondering, that is the story. The island is ours (and so was the bill for new shrubs and bark and labor, and the job of keeping the weeds pulled) again this year.
All in the life of a hotel manager,
Spring Means Lilacs
I realize this post is a little late, but I just got around to pulling some photos off of my iPhone that I took in May, and found these of the lilacs on the grounds of the Peabody Essex Museum. I thought the photos came out really well, so I thought I would share these anyway. Maybe you will want to make plans early to come and visit during next year's lilac season?
I hope to see you here.
Update on the Cardinals in the yard at the Suzannah Flint House
The baby is in the photo above. You can see his/her claws fairly clearly, but the rest is hard to see since he was trying his best to blend in with the nest and the tree limbs.
Dad cardinal
Mom cardinal
Mom cardinal is looking a little better now. She was looking pretty peaked right before the babies were born.
Here are some photos that Jay took on Friday and Saturday. There is one that lets you see the baby cardinal that was just hatched. The others are of Mom and Dad cardinal.
I hope you enjoy this peek at the nature that surrounds us, even in a city-center hotel.
