Peabody Essex Museum
JULY
Saturday, July 11, 10am – noon,
Down by the sea! Create a Giant Sea Turtle
Dead Horse Beach, Salem Willows Park
Free (parking is also free)
Comb the shore for flotsam and debris to create a collaborative sea turtle with environmental artist Kyle Browne. You’ll clean up the coast to protect wildlife and the environment and have fun making a huge ephemeral artwork. Made possible by the Lowell Institute and ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations).

Flotsam Fun

Flotsam, a wordless picture book by David Wiesner, features fantastical images of an underwater world retrieved from a camera that washed up on the beach. Create your own story and images inspired by flotsam collected at local beaches as well as artwork on view in Trash Menagerie.

Museum admission: members free; nonmembers $10
Learn how to surf, build a sand castle, watch films, design your own surfboard and dance under the stars. You won’t go hungry. We’ve planned a casual summer menu of pizza, burgers (beef and veggie), hot dogs, veggies, fruit salad and cool drinks. Cash bar available.

Surfboard Design
Kevin Cunningham displays his eco-friendly hollow wooden surfboards and the tools he uses to shape them. Watch as he transforms raw materials into a surfboard and talks about the inspirations for his designs.
Sand Sculpture
Kristie Haupt from Elwin Designs turns ordinary sand into beautiful sculptures. Haupt, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is a sculptor, painter, illustrator and graphic designer.
Music and Dancing
Ernie Houle from Locomotion DJ Productions keeps the beach party hopping with your favorite summer tunes.
Learn How to Surf with Brickhouse
Meet surfers from Brickhouse, a local surf shop and school. Hear what it’s like to surf in New England year-round and learn the basics of paddling and getting up on a board.
Surfing Simulator
Catch a wave without getting wet! Test your surfing skills on an arcade surfing simulator.
Be sure not to miss these exciting activities at night too!

The Women and the Waves

This documentary explores the lives of female surfers who paddled head first into the male-dominated sport of surfing and found a place of their own. Meet generations of surfers, introduced with breathtaking images by SurfLand photographer Joni Sternbach, who explain why surfing is a dominant force in their lives.

Check out the surfers and prime locations all over the world, including Oahu’s North Shore (monstrous waves), the Gulf shores of Texas (where oil supertankers churn things up), the ice-cold waters of Ireland and the tropics of Rapa Nui.
Our evening at the beach is inspired by the exhibition SurfLand: Photographs by Joni Sternbach.
The SurfLand and Trash Menagerie exhibitions will be open until 9 pm.

If you love a great beer, join us for this special event! You'll get a chance to try six of the finest Dutch and Flemish beers and delicious Dutch foods -- with plenty of both. Our guests for the evening are a knowledgeable and enthusiastic beer aficionado and an expert of Dutch art and culture.

Discussion: Connoisseurship of Dutch Beer and Culture

Peter G. Rose, art and food historian, along with a renowned beer expert, talk about great Dutch beers and the connection between beer and Dutch culture from the 17th century until now. Rose is co-author of Matters of Taste: Food and Drink and Seventeenth-Century Dutch Art and Life. One beer and food pairing will be served during the discussion.
Afterward, sample five more varieties of Dutch and Flemish beer paired with foods that fit the evening’s theme: fabulous cheeses, Dutch-style fries, seafood, chocolate and more. NOTE: These special Dutch and Flemish beers have a high alcohol content. We encourage participants to bring a designated driver, who will be admitted free and will be treated to soft drinks, food, an exhibition tour and the beer/culture discussion.

About the Peabody Essex Museum
The Peabody Essex Museum presents art and culture from New England and around the world. The museum's collections are among the finest of their kind, showcasing an unrivaled spectrum of American art and architecture (including four National Historic Landmark buildings) and outstanding Asian, Asian Export, Native American, African, Oceanic, Maritime and Photography collections.
